My hernia problem started October 21. Diagnosed by a consultant in February 22 as a femoral hernia. I faced a long wait for surgery repair due to concern over the use of general anesthetic with my ongoing cardiac AF condition. In late May, a Friday evening emergency A&E visit and painful manipulation by a duty surgeon prompted me to look for a private alternative. I found Mr. Kirkby-Bott on-line, the Hernia Clinic website was so informative explaining his innovative work on hernia day surgery for all ages and all health conditions. The best decision ever for removing stress, the speed with which things progressed was brilliant the surgery completed by the second week of June. Mr. Kirkby-Bott clearly explained the procedure and the anesthetist reassured me about the local anesthetic and sedation, and how to make best use of the take home medication. I followed the medical team advice to the letter, only using the strong tablets for the first 4 nights to aid sleep, I am pleased 8 weeks on to be feeling energized, back to my normal activities and planning to rejoin my Pilates class for the new term in September. Thank you to Mr. Kirkby-Bott for his skill and to the team for their diligence and excellent care.

Following a diagnosis of hyper parathyroid disease which the consultant suggested I had been ‘harbouring for many years’ I realised that NHS waiting times meant that I should opt to go privately for the operation. Researching on line I chose Mr Kirkby Bott because of his ongoing research in this area in addition to regularly performing this operation. I was impressed by the swiftness with which the operation was arranged by Mr K-B and his backup team as well as the support by The Spire. Eight weeks on, post operation guidance has ensured that I feel fully recovered and fitter and I am very pleased to have been treated by Mr Kirkby- Bott.

Having been offered 4-6 months wait by the NHS for repair of a worsening inguinal hernia; I contacted Mr Kirkby Bott who was able to do it in under two weeks. He recommended local anaesthesia with sedation. The procedure went very smoothly and the anaesthetist Dr Sutherland did a great job also with the sedation. I followed the post op guidance to the letter and at 6 weeks was back to normal. I also had bowel problems pre op which completely disappeared. Pain post op for about 3 days was easily manageable for me with paracetamol. Discomfort, occasional pain and a lot of bruising for 3-4 weeks reducing every day. I still use the hernia pants for higher workloads. I would highly recommend Mr Kirkby Bott and his team.

Response from Mr James Kirkby-Bott

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience and outcomes from inguinal hernia surgery with Hernia Clinic Hampshire. It was very useful to understand how the hernia pants help, as our use of them is one of the innovations of our local anaesthetic and sedation technique. I am really pleased we were able to help you get back to your normal life sooner and appreciate your feedback. Thank you and all the best.

The whole procedure went as explained, and the Nursing care immediately after the procedure was excellent, however, I think I overdid things in the first week of recovery and played at a Gig on Day 5 and this was a mistake! Very uncomfortable in bed for the first 72 hours. I also made the mistake of easing off the pain relief too quickly within the first week. I quickly went back onto it for a few more days and it was a noticeable help. In retrospect, if I have followed the advice given more closely I would have had a better outcome over the first one or two weeks. Some two months down the line everything has healed as it should and I feel absolutely fine - I am back Gigging on a regular basis. Going "Private" at my age, 78, was an excellent decision!
